Change can affect individuals in many ways. Sometimes, people are placed in situations where change is inevitable and unplanned. However, for the Slade family, their enormous life change was calculated and, most importantly, has had a positive impact. Living all of their life in Cornwall, England, Helen and Andrew Slade recently moved to the United States because they felt like they needed the change.
Both had successful careers: Andrew had an accounting firm and Helen a successful hypnotherapy practice, but something was just missing. Five years ago, the Slade family had an opportunity to purchase a vacation home in Kissimmee that would be the defining decision that ultimately brought them to Lake Nona, a place they now call their home. Along with casually renting their second home in Kissimmee, the Slades also would use it to take extended vacations. “Every time we left, we didn’t want to go home,” said Andrew.
The more Andrew, Helen, their son Theo (15 years old), and daughter Rosanna (11) visited Central Florida, the more they loved it. Eventually, their love for the area brought them to find Lake Nona. Lake Nona immediately intrigued them, so every time they came on a vacation to Kissimmee and the Central Florida area, they visited Lake Nona. With their visits to Lake Nona came the initial thoughts of a potential move from the United Kingdom to the United States.
“The more that we know about Lake Nona, the more we are sure this is the right place for us as a family. … We’ve been here for 10 months now, and not one of us has said that we want to go back. Everybody has made us feel so welcome; the people here are so friendly,” commented Andrew. “Also, with all of the medical facilities and the hospitals, we felt this would be a great place for Helen’s hypnotherapy business.”
Helen first became interested in the power of the mind when, as a teenager, she read You Can If You Think You Can by Norman Vincent Peale. That book had a tremendous impact on her, and, since then, she has read hundreds of books on the subject and become fascinated and intrigued with psychology and the power of the mind. She trained in London back in 2010 and is now a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists and an NLP Practitioner.
“I am very interested in the holistic approach and the mind-body connection; I see hypnosis as a wonderful, powerful and relaxing tool to help people to overcome their fears or bad habits,” said Helen. “Hypnosis is completely safe, and you remain in control at all times. You can choose to end the session at any time, and you cannot be made to do anything against your will. It is a wonderful, relaxing and enjoyable experience – and it has so many applications, from weight loss to stress relief, helping people to stop smoking or overcome their fears or phobias”
There are sometimes misconceptions about hypnosis because people picture a swinging pendulum or dangling pocket watch. However, Helen explains that hypnosis is a widely accepted method and alternative for someone who is struggling with a problem. High-achieving people such as Tiger Woods, Ellen DeGeneres, and even Albert Einstein have used hypnosis to help them in their careers. “More and more, medical practitioners are recognizing the benefits of hypnosis and are referring their patients,” remarked Helen. “We really don’t know just how powerful our subconscious is. The human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth!” she added, quoting from one of her favorite books.
Helen always recommends that clients utilize their physicians for health-related recommendations and that hypnosis should not be used in place of medical care but as a complement. “There are no guarantees of success, and hypnosis is not for everyone,” stated Helen, but she has been successful in providing solutions for clients for the following issues: weight loss, smoking, stress, anxiety, phobias, sports and athletic performance, test and exam nerves, insomnia, public speaking, confidence, and much more.
